Shiroy Lily ( Lilium Maclinae sealy)

               

Shiroy lily, which bear the boyanical name, Lilium Maclinae Sealy, Named afterMiss Macklin the name of the wife of a British Botanist, Frank Kingdon Ward, who discovered in 1946 the rareness and  uniqueness of this Lily , Localy known as Kashongwon. He took the seed and technically grew it up to a full bloom in June 1947.   Then later it was displayed in the Chelsea Flower show, UK sponsored by the Prestigious Royal Horticultural Society, London in 1950 and  soon the award of merit. Shiroy Lily or Kashongwon was declare state flower of Manipur in March 1988.

                Thee lily plant is a simple stem, some 1-4 ft. tall with flowers between 1-14 numbers in the beginning. Now, the most amount of flower is about 1-8. It is grown only on the peak of Shongrei, the highest Shirui Peak. Many attempts have been made to grow it in their area but without success. The peak season for it luxurious  blooming second week of May to 1st week of June.

                Shiroy peak is about 7.7 Kms. From Shiroi Village, and Shiroy village is 15 Kms from Ukhrul District Headquarter along NH. 150 Ukhrul to Jessami. From the foot hill junctioned vehicular road of about ½ Km. takes one to Kashong resource centre  and from there one has to track up some 5.5 Kms. Just before reaching the highest peak there is a rest camp where visitor can keep there and rest. Every visit makes ……………..to make another trip.
