Of the various trades that Tangkhul take up, Pottery is one among the most importantly known trades. People of other parts of the world used wheel but Tangkhul do it by hand only. Material used in pottery is two Black rock and Clay. Rock mortars are use for powdering stone and these mortars are called Hamleikhong JC. Hudson, in his book  the Tribe of Manipur (pp.41747) mentions that in Tangkhul,Three clans of Hundung  Hungpung take up pottery as their trade. They are<span style="mso-spacerun: yes; line-height: 115%; font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif">&nbsp; </span>Chahongnao, Yarzimnao and Kharinao and the place where they previously<span style="mso-spacerun: yes; line-height: 115%; font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif">&nbsp; </span>resided is also called Hamleikhong and there are still 2(two) rock mortars in the area/site of their dwelling- one at the new Mini- Secretariat building site and the other in Mr.Paishos place.<o:p> </o:p> </font></span></p> <p align="left" style="tab-stops: -.5in; margin-right: -.5in"><span style="line-height: 115%; font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif"><font size="4"><span style="mso-tab-count: 1; line-height: 115%; font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; </span>An interesting is there of the pottery at Longpi. Historical fact which dates back to a few centuries relates that a certain Orphan from Longpi <span style="mso-spacerun: yes; line-height: 115%; font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif">&nbsp;&nbsp;</span>village come to hundung to tend Buffaloes. He was very diligent and never neglected his duties. During off days and mornings and evenings he would learn various kinds of handicrafts. He also learns to make pots. He sowed every pie and grew rich. Later he married a noble lady of Hungpung and finally he took leave of his guardians and in laws and went back to the Longpi. There he taught many the art of making pots of various shapes and designs. It was taught by elders that this is how Longpi became famous for pottery. One can order any shapes of designs. (1) Collection of stone and Clays from the Quarry. (2) Grinding, Powdering and Mixing.
