Department of Horticulture
& Soil conservation since its establishment of Ukhrul
district has been endorsed for full-filling the task of
horticulture development in the district along with soil
& water conservation measures. The district with rich
in agriculture resource viz. land , rain, water, vegetation
etc. and because of varied agro-climatic condition has
a great scope for the development of horticulture Over
the year the growth of horticulture in the district remained
as a lack luster because for the fact that it is by and
large practiced as non-commercial enterprises by the formers
in their homestead and orchids. Recently with the collaboration
of National Horticulture Board and Development has identified
potential areas of 48,292 ha in the district for commercial
growing of horticulture crop like Fruits, Vegetables,
Species, Flower, Medical Plant etc. it is estimated that
so far over 10% of the potential area was has been covered.
The role of Horticulture has now been established as an
economically viable alternative in the strategy for diversification
of agriculture through its potential to raise productivity
of land provide nutritional security and largely for upliftment
of socio-economic of the district in general. It is also
widely acknowledged that development of Horticulture in
the district is gradually assuming a key for successful
removal of poverty from the rural masses of the district.
But still there is a wide gap exists, between present
and potential levels of development of Horticulture in
the District. Since, popularity of Horticulture has now
been increased and in order to cope with the gap, tremendous
task is ahead with concept of Soil & Water conservation,
availability of good quality planting materials, high
yielding verities of seed, transfer of latest technologist
to the farmer post harvest management, marketing export
and processing etc. without which it will be impossible
to develop horticulture in the long run. |
